Restaurant GST bill format in India: a simple checklist

A restaurant bill in India is a tax invoice. Here is what it should show, in plain words. Your CA has the final word on your own business.

What the bill should show

The restaurant's name, address and GSTIN; a bill number that runs in order; the date; each item with quantity, rate and amount; the taxable value; the tax split as CGST and SGST (or IGST); and the total. Many restaurants add the table number, the cashier and the payment mode.

Bill numbers must not skip

Bill numbers should run in one series without gaps or repeats. A POS keeps the series for you, even when a bill is printed first and paid later.

Service charge

If you add a service charge, show it as its own line, and follow the current government guidance on whether it can be charged by default.

Cancelled bills and voids

Do not delete bills. Cancel them in the POS so the record stays, and keep a log of who cancelled and why.

Which GST rate applies

The GST rate for restaurant food depends on the kind of business, for example a standalone restaurant or a restaurant inside a hotel. Rates change from time to time, so confirm yours with your CA or the GST portal, then set it once in your POS.

Questions people ask

Is a GSTIN needed on a restaurant bill?

If the restaurant is registered under GST, yes, the GSTIN should be on the bill.

Can I edit a bill after printing?

Cancel it and make a new one in the POS. The cancelled bill stays in the record.
